Abstract The purpose of this study is to evaluate an augmented reality game played at a specific location in Santorini, a Greek island, and referring to the location′s environmental problems. The data were collected with the use of a questionnaire, interviews, and observation of 40 students of the fourth grade who played the game on tablets. Results showed that the students generally had a positive attitude toward the game, considered it relatively easy to use and useful for learning, and enjoyed it. Their intention to play it again is due to the fact that they find it entertaining. During the game, several interactions were developed among the members of the team that helped to its successful completion. On the other hand, technical problems (such as the Internet and GPS) as well as other problems that were due to the environment (e.g., strong winds, intense sunshine) were factors that sometimes made it difficult to read and listen to the content of the game from the tablets. The results of this study have implications for the design of mobile augmented reality games in environmental education.
