Preface to ″Geography Education Promoting Sustainability″

In the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it has been stated that all learners should acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development. Consequently, and also with the great proliferation of knowledge and rapid changes in technology, it is important to develop students′ understanding of the principles of sustainability. The Special Issue ″Geography Education Promoting Sustainability″ focuses on views and experiences in geography education at schools and in teacher education, which support curricular work and school practices sharing a vision of a society that lives in balance with Earth′s carrying capacity. In addition, the special issue presents and reflects on the ideas that offer learners a context for developing active, global citizenship and participation for understanding of the interdependencies of ecological, societal, and economic systems. I hope that you will find the Special Issue, ″Geography Education Promoting Sustainability″ enhancing understanding of sustainability and fostering initiatives and applications of sustainability based activities at schools and in teacher education. I would like to extend my thanks to the authors of the articles contained in this book, which include a multi-sided view of sustainability and sustainable development, and many useful teaching and learning ideas for promoting them in Geography Education at different educational levels.
