This case study provides an exploration of the protection process for one region in British Columbia as an example of what is taking place throughout the province & Canada. The main purpose of the study is to provide activities for students to experience the complexities involved in a process of protecting a natural area. The activities require students to work in teams to examine the process for making the decision to protect a natural area, while considering the concerns of several groups in the region. The case study is developed through two activities: working through the steps of creating a protected area by interpreting actual scientific data, considering the issue from several perspectives, and manipulating maps & transparency overlays; and examining the decisions actually made in the Chilcotin Region, comparing these with their own predictions.
