Abstract: The purpose of this study was to find out if natural history programming on television is declining. A study of natural history programming in Los Angeles in April 1973 was used for baseline data. Surveys were made in 1986 of the San Francisco-San Jose Bay Area and Columbus, Ohio, television markets for comparison with Los Angeles. In addition, the amount of natural history programming during prime time in the Bay Area and Columbus markets was compared. Results show that a greater percentage of total air time was devoted to natural history programming in 1986 than in 1973 and that more natural history programs were broadcast during prime time in Columbus than in the Bay Area. However, this prime-time trend is reversed when cable and pay televison stations are excluded from the data.
