Abstract: In this report, the author describes the newly proposed federal agency called the National Institute for the Environment (NIE). The NIE would focus on environmental science as no other currently existing agency does or can. The author discusses the history of the NIE concept, NIE goals?particularly in the areas of education and training and proposed organization?and ways in which environmental educators can assist the NIE effort.
