The conceptual framework of human needs provides a potentially useful but often contentious advantage point from which to view contemporary debates about consumption and sustainability. This chapter reviews a variety of different perspectives on needs, sets out the relevance of modern needs theories for sustainable development, and discusses some of the principal arguments for and against a needs-theoretical view of human well-being. We conclude by drawing out some lessons for sustainability from the continuing debate on needs, drawing attention in particular to key questions about the material requirements associated with social and psychological functioning.
