Abstract:
Education is one of the prerequisites of sustainable development (SD). The training of teachers is a vital prerequisite thereof. What competences do teachers need for ESD? On the basis of Quality Criteria for ESD schools compiled by the international network ENSI 15 Teacher Training Institutions from 8 European countries in the course of the EU Project CSCT developed a dynamic model of Teachers′ ESD competences. This framework has been further developed within a research project commissioned by the Austrian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (model KOM-BiNE). Both models are comprised of a diagram and an explanatory report. They represent an attempt to give some structure to the complexity of ESD. The models address the fields of action of teachers and instructors for ESD which not only concern the instructional setting itself, but also actions in the whole institution and the external relations of the institution. In these fields of action vital competences refer to the teacher′s knowledge, values and feelings, as well as communicating, reflecting within their work, visioning, planning and organizing instructional settings and networking to achieve their goals together with others.
