It is argued that, while different historical conditions have produced distinct forms of multiculturalism and education in the two nations, there are common lessons to be learned if racial ethnic and other social inequalities are to be confronted adequately. Despite their ideological and practical limitations, both education and multiculturalism have the potential, if employed successfully, to expand socio-economic opportunities that are otherwise restricted through global competitve pressures.
