Abstract

Since the early 1990s, following the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, the Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association (IIZ/DVV) has set up a number of projects to meet the challenges to adult education and development that have arisen. The aim of this publication is to provide access to recent writing about some of these projects and this volume contains translations of German language texts covering topics which have been identified as having the highest priorities in IIZ/DVV's projects with its partners. These include the paradigm shift from adult education to learning, institutionalised versus self-organised activities and the ongoing need for support services. The papers are presented under six themes. Under the theme of 'Adult education and lifelong learning' are: The challenge of lifelong learning / Willi Lemke (p. 10-13); Modernization through flexibility of continuing education / Elke Gruber (p. 14-23); Structural changes in adult education / Klaus-Peter Hufer (p. 24-31); Self directed learning in continuing education / Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) (p. 32-37). Under 'Services and quality enhancement' are: Lifelong learning through networking: learning support structures / Peter Faulstich, Christine Zeuner (p. 40-45); Continuing education as a service: co-production involving both networking and individualisation / Erhard Schlutz (p. 46-57); Quality enhancement in adult and higher education / Jorg Knoll (p. 58-67); Product quality in continuing education / Thomas Friedrich (p. 68-72); Education - continuing education - quality: checklist for those considering continuing education (p. 73-81). Under 'Marketing and the new media' are: The integrated marketing plan for Bavarian Volkshochschulen and their regional association / Hans Georg Lossl (p. 84-97); Learning using new media in organisations / Andre Bussing (p. 98-107); The Internet and adult education institutions: challenges, experiences and prospects / Max Hutzler, Evelinde Hutzler (p. 108-112); Are we all becoming cyborgs?: education and the challenge of the Internet / Winfried Marotzki (p.113-121). Under 'Teaching and learning for life' are: How can 'competency' be learnt?: andragogical teaching: a mixture of knowledge and ability / Jost Reischmann (p. 124-133); Counselling: moderation or instruction / Christiane Hof (p. 134-137); Political education crisis or policy crisis?: the role of political education at the turn of the 21st century / Bernd Faulenbach (p. 138-146); From environmental education to education for sustainable development / Gerd Michelsen (p. 147-154); Literacy teaching in Volkshochschulen in North Rhine-Westphalia: results of a survey (p. 155-161). Under 'European and transnational dimensions' are: Educational priorities 1995-2000 / Barbara Fabian (p. 164-167); SOCRATES II (GRUNDTVIG): strengthening the European dimension of adult education / Peter Krug (p. 168-177); Languages are important... developments in the European languages training and certification market / Peter Kiefer (p. 178-185); Developing transnational cooperation: European networks as support for continuing education / Sigi Gruber (p. 186-190). The final article, in place of an epilogue, is: The learning obstacle course and places of illumination / Werner Michl (p. 192-196).
