Abstract:In this paper, I derive five propositions that I believe should form the basis of education for sustainable development (ESD). The discussion reflects my view that the reductionist tendencies in education that converge an established disciplines must be replaced by a more holistic approach. I draw an my experience of running an MA in Environmental Education course by distance learning to support my arguments. If widespread ealamity or social distress does not bring us to our senses ferst, imaginative forms of education my do so more pleasantly (O'Riordan 1981).
